Eight Dead, Nine Missing in Jigawa Boat Capsizing

A tragic boat accident occurred in Jigawa State, specifically in the Malamawar Yan Duts area of Ringim Local Government, resulting in the deaths of eight individuals and leaving nine others missing. The incident involved a wooden boat that was carrying 40 passengers, predominantly female farmers, when it capsized while attempting to cross a waterway.

The Jigawa State Police Command's public relations officer, Shi Isu Adam, confirmed the casualty figures on Monday, stating that search and rescue operations are still in progress. As of now, 23 survivors have been successfully rescued and are receiving medical attention before being discharged to reunite with their families.

The police have urged riverine communities to assist in the search for the remaining nine missing passengers and have advised boat operators to avoid overloading and ensure that all passengers wear life jackets during journeys. This incident highlights the recurring tragedies associated with river transport in northern Nigeria, particularly during the rainy season.
