Opata Defends Tinubu's 'All Is Fair in Politics' Comment

In Abuja, Prof. Damian Opata, a Professor of African Literature at the University of Nigeria, Nsukka and National Chairman of the South East Movement for Tinubu 2027, defended President Bola Tinubu’s statement that “all is fair in politics.” He argued that this expression is historically rooted and not unique to Nigeria.

Opata traced the phrase to the saying “All is fair in love and war,” originating from John Lyly’s Euphues: The Anatomy of Wit. He acknowledged the memorandum from the Catholic Bishops Conference of Nigeria, presented by its President, Bishop Matthew Ndagoso, which called for free and fair elections, improved security, and good governance.

Opata noted that the bishops applauded Tinubu’s response, which highlighted achievements in education and security. He cautioned that while Tinubu’s remark reflects political pragmatism, it could send the wrong signal as he represents the nation’s ethical standards.

Opata urged all political parties to share responsibility for ensuring fair elections and called for restraint in public discourse as Nigeria approaches the 2027 general election.
