OPay Denies Shutdown Rumors, Assures Customers of Operations

OPay Digital Services issued a statement on August 31, 2026, denying a viral rumor that claimed the fintech company would suspend operations from September 1, 2026. The false information circulated on social media, prompting some customers to make precautionary withdrawals.

OPay reassured its users that it is not going on break and remains fully operational. The company identified several inconsistencies in the viral message, such as an incorrect logo, spelling errors, and an unfamiliar communication format, indicating it was not an authentic communication from OPay.

Maxwell Loko, OPay's Vice President of Public and Government Affairs, described the publication as “false, malicious and misleading,” and warned customers against withdrawing funds based on the rumor. OPay urged customers to scrutinize messages before sharing them and to rely on its verified communication platforms for accurate information, emphasizing the potential legal consequences of spreading false information that could undermine confidence in financial institutions.
