OPay Confirms Operations Amid Shutdown Rumors in Nigeria

OPay, a leading fintech company in Nigeria, has officially dismissed rumors about its potential shutdown, which circulated on social media. This clarification was made during a live Town Hall meeting held in Lagos on September 2, 2026.

OPay's Chief Operating Officer, Dotun Adekunle, addressed the misleading claims that suggested the company would cease operations from September 1 and go on an indefinite leave. Adekunle confirmed that OPay was operational on September 2, allowing customers and merchants to access its services without interruption.

He advised the public to be cautious about information shared on social media and to rely on OPay’s verified communication channels for accurate updates. The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) has also recognized the circulating message as fake news.

OPay reiterated its commitment to the Nigerian market through continued investments in technology and financial inclusion, assuring customers that they can continue using its services normally.
