OPay Takes Legal Action Over False Shutdown Claims

OPay, a financial technology company, has begun legal proceedings against individuals it accuses of disseminating false information regarding a purported shutdown of its operations in Nigeria effective September 1, 2026. The company clarified that it remains fully operational and has no plans to exit the Nigerian market.

This announcement was made during a live town hall meeting on Wednesday, which included journalists, OPay ambassadors, and social media influencers, aimed at reassuring customers and business partners. Dotun Daniel Adekunle, OPay’s Chief Technology Officer, emphasized the importance of accountability in information sharing, stating that the circulating message was false.

He confirmed that OPay is expanding its operations, having opened over 26 new offices in Nigeria this year. Akinfolabi Rokosu, OPay’s Chief Legal Counsel, stated that the misleading message appeared to be an official communication from OPay and could cause panic and financial losses among customers.

OPay is cooperating with law enforcement agencies, including the DSS and the Police, in their investigation and is pursuing legal action against those responsible.
