OPay enlists DSS, police to probe false shutdown claims

Following viral social media claims asserting that the company plans to cease operations, OPay has called upon Nigeria Police and the Department of State Services to probe false information circulating online. At a Wednesday press conference held in Lagos, the fintech firm's Chief Legal Counsel Akinfolabi Rokosu disclosed that security agencies have initiated active inquiries into how the misleading content originated and propagated.

Rokosu stressed that such unverified reports threaten Nigeria's financial system stability and expose customers to potential monetary losses. The company reiterated its commitment to continued service delivery and stated categorically it will not withdraw from the Nigerian market.

A message claiming that operations would terminate on September 1, 2026 prompted this swift action by OPay. Legal action against those behind the misinformation campaign represents part of OPay's broader strategy .

Alongside police and DSS involvement, the company mobilized relevant regulatory authorities to address the situation comprehensively. To tackle stakeholder apprehensions and demonstrate that business continues normally, OPay convened a town hall meeting that same Wednesday.

The Nigerian fintech landscape has experienced periodic regulatory scrutiny alongside reputational threats stemming from unsubstantiated social media claims. By escalating the matter to federal law enforcement, OPay signaled that potential damage to market confidence justified moving beyond routine corporate messaging.

Across its entire customer and merchant base, the company confirmed that all operations proceed without interruption.
