Navy Intercepts Vessel for Illegal Oil Theft in Akwa Ibom

On July 23, 2026, the Nigerian Navy successfully intercepted and arrested the vessel MT FILIA at UTUE Terminal, Akwa Ibom, during an operation under Operation DELTA SENTINEL. This operation was based on credible intelligence from the Navy’s surveillance systems.

The vessel was allegedly involved in siphoning stolen crude oil and was found carrying approximately 32.82 metric tonnes of Fuel Oil and 650 metric tonnes of crude oil without proper documentation. The vessel, its crew of 12, and the recovered cargo were taken into custody for further investigation and potential prosecution.

Vice Admiral Idi Abbas, Chief of the Naval Staff, praised the personnel's professionalism and commitment, reaffirming the Navy's dedication to combating crude oil theft and maritime criminality. Operation DELTA SENTINEL has previously led to the recovery of over 4.7 million litres of petroleum products and the arrest of over 91 suspects connected to crude oil theft.

The operation aligns with Nigeria's efforts to enhance crude oil production and secure its maritime environment.
