Bobi Wine Flees Uganda, Appoints Deputy Amid Crisis

Bobi Wine, whose real name is Robert Kyagulanyi, has fled Uganda after the January 15 presidential elections, where incumbent Yoweri Museveni was re-elected for a seventh term amid allegations of electoral fraud. Wine announced on Saturday that Lina Zedriga would lead the National Unity Platform (NUP) in his absence.

He cited threats to his safety and the repression faced by opposition members, including the arrest of 30 opposition members and the detention of 2,000 supporters following the election. Wine criticized the Ugandan government's legitimacy and the extensive search efforts by security forces to locate him, which he described as a failure despite significant investment of taxpayer money.

He plans to advocate for international sanctions against Uganda while maintaining that he will return to the country. Wine's departure comes after a period of heightened tensions and an internet blackout in Uganda, which has drawn international concern.
