Oshoala Calls for Support Ahead of South Africa Clash

Asisat Oshoala has urged Nigerians to rally behind the Super Falcons as they prepare for a critical 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup play-off against South Africa on Thursday. The Falcons' hopes for automatic qualification were dashed following a 1-0 defeat to Cameroon in the quarter-finals of the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations.

This loss places Nigeria among four WAFCON quarter-final losers competing for two spots in the knockout play-off matches, with the winners advancing to FIFA’s Intercontinental Play-Off Tournament for three World Cup tickets. Oshoala acknowledged the disappointment of the team's performance this year but expressed determination to respond positively against South Africa.

She emphasized the importance of national support, stating, “The World Cup ticket is at stake, so this is the time when we really need everyone to support the team.” The Super Falcons, who have never missed a Women’s World Cup since its inception in 1991, face a challenging path to maintain their record.
