IPC Launches AI System to Safeguard Journalists in Osun

The International Press Centre (IPC) announced the deployment of a WhatsApp-enabled artificial intelligence incident reporting system named WAFLO to monitor and document attacks against journalists during the Osun State governorship election on August 15, 2026. IPC Executive Director Lanre Arogundade revealed this initiative during a press conference in Osogbo.

WAFLO is designed for real-time reporting, verification, documentation, and monitoring of incidents affecting journalists and press freedom during the election. It aims to cover incidents such as assaults and threats against journalists.

Arogundade stated that the platform would allow journalists to report safety concerns as they arise, enabling stakeholders to respond promptly. Following its pilot implementation in Osun State, WAFLO will be upgraded for full deployment during the 2027 general elections.

This initiative is part of the European Union Support to Democratic Governance in Nigeria Phase Two program and is implemented in collaboration with the Nigeria Union of Journalists and the Centre for Media and Society.
