Police Fire Tear Gas at Voters During Osun Election

On Saturday, during the gubernatorial election in Osun State, personnel of the Nigeria Police Force reportedly fired tear gas at voters and officials of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) at a Registration Area Centre in Ife East Ward 10, Modakeke Ward 3. Pelumi Olajengbesi, spokesperson for the Imole Campaign Council, disclosed the incident, which was accompanied by video footage.

The affected individuals were preparing to move to polling units with election materials when the police allegedly intervened. The Imole Campaign Council urged the Nigeria Police Force and relevant authorities to investigate the incident and restore calm, stressing that voters should be allowed to exercise their rights without fear or intimidation.

The election featured 15 candidates, including incumbent Governor Ademola Adeleke of the Accord Party, Munirudeen Bola Oyebamiji of the All Progressives Congress, and Najeem Salaam of the African Democratic Congress. The council also raised concerns about armed security personnel surrounding the residence of the Speaker of the Osun State House of Assembly, Adewale Egbedun, on Election Day.
