Osun Residents Demand Action on Electricity Blackout

On Wednesday, residents of Osun State staged a protest against the persistent poor electricity supply, demanding improvements from the Ibadan Electricity Distribution Company (IBEDC). The protest took place in the Ok Baal area, where demonstrators gathered to express their frustrations.

They issued a seven-day ultimatum to IBEDC to restore power supply to affected communities, warning of potential collective action if their demands are not met. Akeem Badmu, the protest leader, emphasized the severe impact of inadequate electricity on households and small businesses, with many communities receiving an average of only four hours of electricity daily, contrary to the minimum 12-16 hours stipulated for their classification.

The residents also raised concerns about allegations of electricity being diverted and sold to the highest bidder. Ifeanyi Ikeji, representing IBEDC, acknowledged the issues but noted that the current power constraints prevent immediate improvements.

The protest highlighted the urgent need for action to address the ongoing electricity crisis in the region.
