Abia State Plans to Disconnect from National Power Grid

Governor Alex Otti of Abia State announced during a media chat that the state is moving to disconnect from the national power grid. This initiative is part of efforts to generate and distribute its own power, with a focus on a new 15 megawatt independent power project at Abia State University (ABSU).

The governor highlighted that the current power generation capacity from Geometr Power is 141 megawatts, with plans to boost this to 266 megawatts through the installation of new gas turbines. The project aims to supply power to Umuahia and surrounding areas, allowing for excess power sales to eight local governments.

Otti emphasized that the state will not subsidize electricity once it begins generating its own power, which is expected to provide cheaper and more reliable 24-hour electricity supply. The governor also mentioned that the state university will be able to operate independently from the national grid once the project is completed.
