Abia State to Disconnect from National Grid for Power

Governor Alex Otti of Abia State announced plans for the state to detach from the national grid, aiming to enhance its power supply through the installation of a new 125 megawatt gas turbine by Geometr Power. This project will increase Geometr Power's capacity to 266 megawatts, sufficient to supply power to Umuahia and surrounding areas, while also allowing for excess power sales.

The initiative will specifically benefit eight local governments in the Aba ring-fenced area. Additionally, Abia State University (ABSU) is set to disconnect from the national grid upon the completion of a 15 megawatt independent power project, which follows the restoration of power to the university after 13 years of outages.

Governor Otti emphasized that the state government will not subsidize electricity once it begins generating its own independent power, which is expected to be cheaper and provide 24-hour supply.
