Nigerian Athletes Switch Allegiances Amid Exodus

A significant trend has emerged as overseas-born athletes, including Nigerian sprint star Favour Ofili, are switching their national representation to countries like Qatar and Turkey. Ofili, a record holder in the 200m, faced administrative negligence that led to her omission from the 100m event at the 2024 Olympics due to a registration error.

Despite attempts by the Nigerian National Sports Commission to block her switch, she officially changed her allegiance in August 2025. Other athletes, such as Emmanuel Bamidel, the 2023 NCAA champion, have also made similar moves, citing substandard facilities and lack of support in Nigeria.

Jami Schlueter, who became eligible to represent Nigeria in November 2025, has already set a national record in the heptathlon. Additionally, Oji has made a remarkable start in shot put, breaking the Nigerian U20 record.

This exodus reflects a broader concern regarding the management of athletics in Nigeria and the pursuit of better opportunities abroad.
