Oxfam Celebrates Five Years of Climate Governance in Nigeria

Oxfam Nigeria marked the conclusion of its five-year climate governance program on Thursday in Abuja, led by Country Director John Makina. The program, aimed at empowering communities and advocating for climate justice, achieved notable milestones, including the cultivation of 15,500 seedlings and the distribution of 3,500 clean cook stoves in Bauchi State, which contributed to emission reduction and improved health.

The initiative trained 256 community volunteers, including persons with disabilities, in producing natural-based briquette products. Oxfam also supported the development of new climate laws to unlock $15.5 billion in local climate financing and expand climate-smart livelihoods.

The program reached 10 million Nigerians through various media platforms, enhancing civic participation and strengthening advocacy for climate justice. Auwal Rafsanjani, Executive Director of Cislac, noted the project's impact on tax justice campaigns and compliance in the extractive sector.

Despite the end of donor funding, the need for continued advocacy against climate challenges remains critical.
