Nigeria Commits to Maritime Decarbonization Goals

During the IMO GreenVoyage2050 workshop held in Lagos, Dr. Adegboyega Oyetola, the former governor of Osun State, reaffirmed Nigeria's commitment to achieving net-zero carbon emissions in the maritime sector.

He emphasized the importance of developing a national maritime decarbonization action plan that aligns with global climate goals and strengthens the sector's competitiveness. John Ogwuch, Director of Maritime Safety and Security at the Federal Ministry of Marine and Blue Economy, noted that the initiative would support emission reduction through technological collaboration among stakeholders.

The workshop highlighted the need for compliant shipping companies to be rewarded, while non-compliant ones would face penalties. Dr.

Tenioy Majekodunmi assured that the National Council on Climate Change would support Nigeria's participation in the IMO GreenVoyage2050 program. The event also emphasized the necessity of including women in maritime discussions and the importance of credible data for monitoring emissions.
