Oyo Assembly Approves State Police Bill Framework

On September 30, 2026, the Oyo State House of Assembly passed the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria (Sixth Alteration) Bill, 2026, which provides a constitutional framework for the establishment and operation of State Police Services across Nigeria. The bill was approved during a plenary session presided over by Speaker Adebo Ogundoyin, following a clause-by-clause consideration.

This consideration came after a letter from the Clerk to the National Assembly, Kamoru Ogunlana, transmitted the bill for approval. The National Assembly had sent the State Police Constitution Alteration Bill to all 36 state Houses of Assembly on September 16, 2026.

With this passage, Oyo joined Osun, Edo, and Rivers in considering the bill within the 30-day window. The Senate passed the bill on June 24, 2026, and the House of Representatives on July 23, 2026.

Ogundoyin stated that the bill would significantly impact the Oyo Assembly's legislative framework, enabling the establishment of State Police Services with defined responsibilities and oversight.
