Makinde Calls for UN Probe into Oyo Abduction Incident

Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde has called for an international investigation by the United Nations into the abduction of 39 pupils and six teachers from three schools in the Oriire Local Government Area on May 15, 2026. The Alliance for Peace and Movement (APM) defended Makinde's request, stating it aims to establish the truth and strengthen efforts to combat terrorism.

The statement, issued by APM's public secretary Abubakar Yusuf, emphasized that the call for international scrutiny should not undermine Nigeria's sovereignty but rather enhance collaboration with international partners in fighting terror. The demand has received mixed reactions, with some Nigerian senators cautioning against comments that could undermine federal security efforts.

The APM also pointed out that previous calls for international cooperation against terrorism by President Bola Tinubu were similar, questioning the sudden backlash against Makinde's request. The APM reiterated the importance of transparency and accountability in addressing the security challenges facing Nigeria.
