Oyo State Reschedules Local Government Elections to 2026

The Oyo State Independent Electoral Commission (OYSIEC), led by Chairman Babatunde Adeniyi, has announced the rescheduling of local government elections to December 29, 2026. This decision was made to prevent operational conflicts with the presidential and national assembly elections, which are now set for February 20, 2027.

The original date for the local government elections was January 16, 2027. OYSIEC's statement emphasized the need for this change to ensure optimal security and voter participation while maintaining the integrity of the electoral process.

The commission has informed political parties, security agencies, and the general public about the new election date, which will take place from 8:00 AM to 3:00 PM. Additionally, the campaign period for political parties will conclude at midnight on December 28, 2026, with any necessary rerun elections scheduled for January 5, 2027.
