Oyo State Reschedules Local Government Elections to December

The Oyo State Independent Electoral Commission (OYSIEC), led by chairman Babatunde Adeniyi, has announced the rescheduling of the local government elections to Tuesday, December 29, 2026. This decision was made public in a statement released in Ibadan on Tuesday.

The elections were originally scheduled for Saturday, January 16, 2027. The rescheduling is a response to the recent revision of the national electoral timetable by the Independent National Electoral Commission, which has moved the presidential and national assembly elections to February 20, 2027, from the previously set date of January 16, 2027.

The OYSIEC aims to prevent operational congestion and ensure optimal security for voter participation. The commission has urged political parties and relevant stakeholders to prepare according to the revised electoral timeline.

A rerun election is set for Tuesday, January 5, 2027, if necessary, with the election period for political parties ending at midnight on Monday, December 28, 2026.
