Oyo State Defends Court Action Against EFCC's Request

The Oyo State Government has defended its decision to seek judicial interpretation regarding the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission’s (EFCC) request for documents related to the state’s finances. Governor Seyi Makinde's administration asserts that he has nothing to hide and criticized the All Progressives Congress (APC) for misleading claims about the court action.

In a statement from Dr Sulaimon Olanrewaju, the Governor’s special adviser on media, the government clarified that approaching the Federal High Court was a constitutional step to understand the EFCC's powers, not an attempt to evade investigation. The EFCC had requested copies of all contracts and transaction details with contractors from 2021 to the present.

The state responded by asking the EFCC to specify the contractors under investigation but claimed the EFCC did not reply. Justice Nkeonye Maha ruled that the EFCC's request was speculative and set aside its letter dated June 2, 2025, emphasizing that requests must be reasonable and linked to specific allegations.
