Makinde Warned Against 2027 Presidential Bid Amid EFCC Probe

Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde disclosed that an All Progressives Congress (APC) chieftain warned him on June 1, 2025, not to contest the 2027 presidential election after the party endorsed President Bola Tinubu as its candidate. This warning followed Makinde's April 2025 appearance on Channels Television, where he expressed his capability to run for president.

The day after the warning, the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) requested extensive financial records from the Oyo State Accountant-General without specifying any allegations. Makinde's administration sought a court's interpretation of the EFCC's request, which was deemed speculative and unconnected to specific wrongdoing by Justice Nkeonye Maha.

The ruling affirmed the EFCC's constitutional powers but emphasized that such powers must be exercised lawfully. Makinde stated that the judgment was a victory for the rule of law and highlighted the importance of evidence-based accountability in investigations.
