Makinde Accuses EFCC of Undermining Democracy in Nigeria

Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde criticized the Federal Government for allegedly using the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) to undermine governance in opposition-controlled states. In a statement on his X handle, he condemned the increasing use of federal institutions for political purposes, warning that such actions threaten Nigeria's democracy.

Makinde stated that while no government should be above scrutiny, the selective targeting of states or public officials by anti-graft agencies erodes public confidence. He specifically criticized the alleged unlawful freezing of an official state government account by the EFCC, asserting that it exceeded the agency's legal powers.

Furthermore, he suggested that the timing of these actions was intended to influence the upcoming Osun State governorship election. Makinde called for federal institutions to act impartially and urged Nigerians and civil society to remain vigilant against political intimidation, emphasizing the importance of protecting the independence and credibility of public institutions.
