Oyo Governor Makinde Reports Abduction After Presidential Bid

Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde stated that the abduction of a pupil and teacher in Oriir Local Government Area took place just hours after he declared his intention to contest the 2027 presidential election. He described the timing as unprecedented for his administration.

The incident occurred on May 15, with the abduction happening shortly after 4 AM. Governor Makinde expressed gratitude to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for the military and police's efforts in rescuing the victims, who were held captive for 56 days.

The rescue operation involved multiple security agencies, including the Department of State Services (DSS), and resulted in the arrest of eight suspects. The victims were freed without any negotiation or prisoner exchange, despite the kidnappers' demands.

Following the incident, the Oyo State government is providing medical care and support to the rescued individuals. Makinde had formally declared his presidential ambition on May 14 during a joint rally with the People's Democratic Party and the Allied People's Movement in Ibadan.
