Oyo Sets Up Judicial Panel to Investigate Oriire Abduction

Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo State has created a Judicial Commission of Inquiry charged with investigating an abduction that took place in Oriire Local Government Area. Comprising eight members and chaired by Prof.

Mojeed Owoade, the panel received its formal inauguration on Friday inside the Executive Council Chamber at the Governor's Office in Ibadan. At the heart of this inquiry lies the May 15, 2026 abduction of pupils and instructors from Esinele and Yawota communities within Oriire.

State Commissioner for Information Prince Dotun Oyelade indicated that the commission would focus on revealing what happened and the surrounding details, while also developing measures intended to avert repeat incidents. Governor Makinde stressed that creating such an independent body aimed not to discredit or diminish the work of law enforcement agencies.

His objective, he noted, was enabling thorough investigation of all aspects, resolving outstanding inquiries, and constructing a thorough account of the abduction event. The panel's formation reflects mounting anxiety regarding security breaches affecting rural locations throughout Nigeria's southwest.

Findings and recommendations from this inquiry are anticipated to shape future policy decisions and approaches to security management within Oyo State. According to Commissioner Oyelade, the effort seeks to bring clarity to what transpired during the abduction and propose fitting remedial action.
