Oyo State Partners with UNICEF to Combat Female Genital Mutilation Across Nigeria

Oyo State, in collaboration with UNICEF, is intensifying efforts to prosecute cases of Female Genital Mutilation (FGM) across several Nigerian states. Despite existing laws criminalizing FGM, low reporting, weak enforcement, and fragmented collaboration hinder effective prosecution.

The engagement meeting in Lagos focused on enhancing the justice system's response to FGM cases, aiming to address the continued prevalence of the harmful practice. The workshop brought together law enforcement officials, judicial actors, NGOs, and religious leaders to strengthen the prosecution of FGM cases in Edo, Ekiti, Ondo, Osun, and Oyo States, emphasizing the need for a unified approach to combat FGM.
