Wike-Backed Convention Threatens PDP Reconciliation Efforts

Gbenga Hashim, a chieftain of the People's Democratic Party (PDP), has expressed serious concerns regarding a convention proposed by supporters of Nyesom Wike, the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory. Hashim warns that this convention could derail ongoing reconciliation efforts within the party.

He describes the plan as a significant threat to the unity and survival of the PDP, noting that stakeholders had previously agreed to pursue a unified convention following a recent court appeal judgment. In a statement issued in Abuja on Tuesday, Hashim cautioned Wike's faction against violating a gentleman's agreement that had been reached to ensure the party's integrity.

He specifically highlighted the potential impact on state executive committees in Plateau, Nasarawa, Kaduna, and Kano, stressing that any unilateral actions could exacerbate the party's crisis and weaken its cohesion ahead of future elections. Hashim urged all parties to adhere to the agreed framework for power-sharing to avoid political losses.
