PENGASSAN Implements New Succession Model for Stability

The Petroleum and Natural Gas Senior Staff Association of Nigeria (PENGASSAN) has implemented a new succession model aimed at preventing conflicts and prolonged disputes during leadership transitions. President Festus Osifo announced this change on Saturday in Abuja during a tribute event for late former president Francis Johnson, who served from June 2014 until his death on May 31, 2019.

The association's constitutional amendment, unanimously passed in August 2025, allows the elected deputy president to automatically succeed the president, thereby eliminating intense competition for the presidency. This decision was influenced by a review of succession models from other organizations, particularly the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nigeria (ICAN).

Osifo emphasized that this new arrangement is expected to enhance stability within PENGASSAN and reduce tensions typically associated with leadership transitions, with the next transition scheduled for August.
