Pensioners Praise Tinubu for N39.6bn Arrears Payment

Pensioners in Nigeria have expressed their gratitude to President Bola Tinubu for the approval of a N39.6 billion payment aimed at settling pension arrears, which includes a 10.6% increase. Godwin Abumisi, the director of the Nigerian Union of Pensioners, commended the president's commitment to the welfare of elderly citizens.

The payment, announced by the Federal Government, is part of a broader initiative to strengthen confidence in pension administration and ensure regular monthly payments to retirees. The total amount released for pension-related interventions includes N758 billion for various pension schemes.

Additionally, the government has committed to addressing inherited pension liabilities from defunct companies, including N25.05 billion for Nigerian Telecommunications Limited (NITEL) and N9.48 billion for Mobil Telecommunications Limited. Abumisi urged pensioners to remain loyal to the government and support Tinubu's re-election bid ahead of the 2027 general elections.
