Keiko Fujimori Elected First Female President of Peru

Keiko Fujimori has made history by becoming Peru's first woman president elected by popular vote, following a narrow victory over left-wing rival Roberto Sánchez in the presidential runoff held on June 7, 2021. The National Jury of Elections declared Fujimori the winner after a comprehensive review of the ballots, with her conservative party, Fuerza Popular, securing 50.135% of the valid votes (9,223,396 votes) against Sánchez's 49.865% (9,173,755 votes), a margin of just 49,641 votes from the 18 million ballots cast.

This victory marks the culmination of Fujimori's fourth presidential campaign, having previously run unsuccessfully in 2011, 2016, and 2021. She is the daughter of former president Alberto Fujimori, whose administration was known for its controversial authoritarian rule.

Fujimori has pledged to govern for all Peruvians, regardless of political affiliation, and aims to restore security, strengthen the economy, and combat rising crime. She will officially take office on July 28, 2021, coinciding with Peru's Independence Day.
