Peter Obi Rejects Atiku's Fuel Subsidy Proposal

Peter Obi, the presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), publicly rejected the proposal by Atiku Abubakar, his counterpart from the African Democratic Congress (ADC), to restore fuel subsidy in Nigeria if elected in 2027. During a speech at the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) conference in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, on Monday, Obi supported the removal of the fuel subsidy but criticized the government's mismanagement of the savings generated from this policy.

He asserted that poor management should not be a reason to reverse the subsidy removal. Obi pointed out that the Tinubu administration failed to implement adequate measures to mitigate the immediate impacts of the subsidy removal on Nigerians.

He stated that the government should have provided alternatives and ensured that the funds saved were invested in productive areas to enhance the economy. Obi reiterated that he had proposed a structured approach to subsidy removal in his manifesto prior to the 2023 presidential election, emphasizing that if he were in power, the proceeds would be managed effectively for the benefit of Nigerians.
