Peter Obi's Edo Visit Ignites Reactions Amid Warnings

Peter Obi, the presidential candidate of the Nigerian Democratic Congress, visited Edo State to attend the funeral rites of Most Rev. Augustine Obiora Akubeze on Wednesday. This visit occurred despite a warning from Governor Monday Okpebholo, issued on July 18, 2025, which stated that Obi should notify state authorities before entering Edo for security reasons.

The governor linked Obi's previous visit to a donation of ₦15 million to the St Philomena Hospital School of Nursing Sciences with a resurgence of violence in the state. However, Obi's return to Benin City was met with a large crowd of supporters, who gathered to welcome him, raising questions about the governor's warning.

Social media reactions highlighted the enthusiasm of Edo youths, who turned out in significant numbers without any formal campaign announcement. At the time of reporting, neither Governor Okpebholo nor the Edo State Government had responded to Obi's visit.
