Thugs Disrupt Peter Obi's Humanitarian Visit in Benue

Peter Obi, the presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress, faced disruption during his visit to Benue State, where he intended to meet victims of the June 2025 attacks in Yelewata. Thugs, suspected to be loyalists of a political party, blocked the Makurdi-Gboko Federal Highway, chanting against Obi.

Governor Hyacinth Alia's administration denied any involvement, asserting that Obi failed to notify relevant security agencies about his visit. However, the Benue State Police Command confirmed they were aware of Obi's movement and had arranged security for the visit.

Obi had previously canceled a trip in April 2025 due to political interference. The state government questioned why a presidential candidate would arrive without notifying security authorities, while Obi emphasized his trip was humanitarian.

The situation has raised concerns about political interference and the state of democracy in Nigeria, with accusations directed at the governor regarding the actions of the thugs.
