Plateau Doctors Demand Salary Review, Threaten Strike

Resident doctors in Plateau State have issued a seven-day ultimatum to the state government regarding unresolved salary and welfare concerns, warning of a potential strike if their demands are not addressed. The ultimatum was conveyed in a letter dated April 20, 2026, addressed to the Chief Medical Director of Plateau State Specialist Hospital.

The doctors expressed their dissatisfaction with the government's failure to act on their earlier request made in December 2025 for a review of their remuneration to align with the current national salary structure. They noted that delays have led to an exodus of doctors from the state, exacerbating the strain on the healthcare workforce.

The letter, signed by Dr. Elizabeth Kassem and Dr.

Ritbul Jacob, highlights the extreme disappointment over the lack of meaningful progress and warns that if no concrete action is taken within the stipulated timeframe, they will withdraw their services. The National Association of Government General Medical and Dental Practitioners also expressed concern over the non-implementation of the correct consolidated medical salary structure.
