Plateau State Closes Schools Amid Diphtheria Outbreak

The Plateau State Government has mandated the immediate temporary closure of all public and private primary and secondary schools across the state as a precaution against suspected diphtheria cases. This directive, issued by Commissioner for Information Joyce Ramnap, takes effect from Monday, September 7, 2026, and will remain in force until further notice.

Under the leadership of Governor Caleb Manasseh Mutfwang, the closure is a response to suspected diphtheria cases reported in Jos North, Wase, Jos South, and Bassa Local Government Areas. The government emphasized that all schools, including those that have already resumed for the new term, must comply with the closure.

Parents, teachers, and school owners are urged to ensure students remain at home during this period. The closure aims to limit exposure among children while health workers conduct contact tracing, vaccination, and decontamination in affected areas.

Updates regarding the resumption of academic activities will be communicated to the public.
