Benue State Evacuates Students Amid Plateau Unrest

Following a violent attack in Angwan Rukuba that resulted in the deaths of 28 people, Benue State has initiated the evacuation of its indigenes studying at the University of Jos, Plateau State. The evacuation, approved by Governor Hyacinth Alia, commenced on Thursday, April 2, 2026, with over 600 students successfully returned to Benue State.

The decision was made to safeguard the lives and welfare of these students, who are considered the future leaders of the state. The evacuation is part of a broader response to the heightened tensions in the region.

Governor Alia's chief press secretary, Kula Tersoo, confirmed the evacuation in a statement, emphasizing the necessity of protecting the students. The state government is also in discussions with Plateau State Governor Caleb Mutfwang to ensure security and facilitate a return to normalcy.

Additionally, the first semester examinations at the university have been postponed due to the ongoing unrest.
