Police Arrest 6 Officers for Extortion in Benin City

The Nigeria Police Force has arrested six officers and three other individuals in Benin City for their involvement in a syndicate that extorted money from residents. The arrested officers include ASP Bonni Paul Onajit, Insp. Ehubariem Wisdom, Insp. Arebam Godspow, Cpl. Mordi Philip, Cpl. Okon Elvi, and dismissed Corporal Destini Emmanuel.

The other suspects are Goodluck Jaja, a point-of-sale operator, and drivers Samuel Nichola and Etim Bright. According to ASP Eno Ikioyedem, the group operated along the Teboga axis off Aduwawa, where they allegedly abducted victims and compelled them to withdraw money under duress.

The arrests followed numerous complaints from residents about harassment and impersonation of police personnel. The suspects are currently undergoing internal disciplinary procedures, including orderly room trials, and will be prosecuted upon the conclusion of investigations.

Ikioyedem emphasized that the actions of the suspects have brought disrepute to the Nigeria Police Force and warned against facilitating illegal transactions.
