Village Head Arrested with Illegal AK-47 in Akwa Ibom

On March 24, 2026, at 10:15 AM, the Akwa Ibom State Police Command apprehended John Edet, a 60-year-old village head of Asik Ubofa Fish Settlement in Effiat Clan, Mbo Local Government Area. The arrest was made following credible evidence that he possessed an illegal AK-47 rifle.

Commissioner of Police Baba Moham Azar directed the operation, which involved a coordinated effort to verify the information received. During the operation, police successfully recovered the AK-47 rifle and two empty magazines from Edet's location.

He was arrested without incident and is currently in police custody, where discreet investigations have commenced to ascertain the source of the firearm and determine the motivation behind his possession of it, as well as any possible accomplices. The Akwa Ibom State Police Command emphasized its commitment to combatting the proliferation of illegal firearms and encouraged individuals in possession of such weapons to voluntarily surrender to avoid legal repercussions.
