Akwa Ibom Police Arrest Masquerade Leader for Highway Extortion

The Akwa Ibom State Police Command arrested and prosecuted the leader of a masquerade group, Uwem Umanah, and his accomplice, David Michael, for blocking a highway, assaulting citizens, and extorting money. The group armed with machetes, spears, and sticks attacked passersby, including a member of the NYSC, demanding tolls.

Despite a ban on unregulated masquerade displays, the suspects, including a 45-year-old leader, openly defied the state government's directives. The police confirmed charges against the suspects and emphasized zero tolerance for lawlessness, urging community leaders to cooperate in maintaining peace and order.
