Police Arrest Suspected Serial Killer in Cross River

Akaniyen Ignatiu, a 49-year-old man, was arrested by the Cross River State Police Command for allegedly murdering two elderly men, Oko Okon, 75, and Okon Akpan, 73, in separate attacks within the Abanyama Community of Odukpani Local Government Area. The killings, which occurred within days of each other, sparked panic among residents, leading to concerns that a serial killer was on the loose.

The first victim, Oko Okon, was found dead on May 24, and the circumstances surrounding his death fueled anxiety in the community. The second victim, Okon Akpan, was discovered dead shortly after, deepening tensions and triggering speculation.

Investigators made a breakthrough when community members identified Ignatiu as someone seen with a mattress belonging to one of the deceased, which he allegedly attempted to sell. During questioning, Ignatiu admitted to the killings, claiming they were motivated by grievances he harbored for two decades against the victims, whom he believed were linked to the deaths of his family members.

The police have cautioned against drawing conclusions from Ignatiu's claims and are conducting a thorough investigation.
