Two Arrested for Attempted Baby Theft in Abia State

On May 25, 2026, the Abia State Police Command arrested two suspects, Nzubechi Chinagorom, 24, and Chinonso Chibundu, 25, for their involvement in an attempted theft of a two-week-old baby girl from Amarachi Chinyereugo, 32, in Olokoro, Umuahia South LGA. The suspects attempted to forcibly take the infant, resulting in a struggle during which the mother was assaulted and stabbed with a kitchen knife, causing the child to fall and hit her head on the ground.

Chinonso Chibundu acted as a lookout outside the house during the incident. Following a distress call from the victim, the suspects fled the scene but were later apprehended near a bus stop, where police found them in possession of a substance suspected to be a hard drug.

The mother and child were immediately taken to the hospital for treatment. The suspects will be charged in court on June 2, and the Abia State Police Command reiterated its commitment to protecting lives and property.
