Martins Vincent Otse, popularly recognised as VeryDarkMan, has been publicly called upon by the Nigeria Police Force to substantiate allegations that officers deployed at highway checkpoints relay information concerning wealthy travellers to kidnapping syndicates. On Thursday, August 27, CSP Ani Iniedu, the Force's Public Relations Officer, issued a statement labelling such claims as unverified and potentially damaging to an institution entrusted with protecting millions of Nigerians.
During a panel discussion hosted by the Nigerian Bar Association conference, VeryDarkMan initially articulated his position that certain checkpoint personnel operate as information sources for criminal organisations, communicating details regarding passenger movements. The police characterised this narrative as harmful and demanded that substantive evidence be provided to back up the accusation.
Following the police's call for documentation, VeryDarkMan posted video content on Instagram titled 'Evidence One,' purporting to display law enforcement personnel facing kidnapping and conspiracy charges. Subsequently, however, the activist altered his stance, announcing via another video that disclosure of his materials would occur only within a court of law rather than being surrendered directly to police.
VeryDarkMan maintained his readiness to respond to the police invitation while declining to release his materials outside of judicial proceedings. This dispute underscores persistent friction between the activist—who has cultivated a substantial social media audience through investigations concerning alleged wrongdoing by state and corporate entities—and law enforcement bodies demanding verification of public statements connecting officers to criminal involvement.
