Six Anambra Police Officers Detained for Extortion

The Anambra State Police Command has detained six officers from the Okpoko Police Division in Onitsha for allegedly extorting ₦200,000 from a trader. The incident occurred when the victim's wife recorded a video showing her husband being harassed and handcuffed by the officers, who demanded money despite the victim having valid vehicle documentation.

Initially, the officers sought ₦500,000 but eventually accepted ₦200,000. Following the video's circulation, the police command acknowledged the situation and confirmed an ongoing investigation.

The detained officers include two Assistant Superintendents of Police and four Inspectors. Anambra State Police Commissioner Ikioy Orutugu ordered the detainment of the officers pending the investigation's outcome, emphasizing the seriousness of the matter and the need for disciplinary action.

The police command has invited the victim to provide additional testimony to aid the investigation.
