Sokoto Police Launch New Anti-Kidnapping Unit

The Sokoto State Police Command announced the establishment of a new anti-kidnapping unit, the Violent Crime Response Unit (VCRU), on Thursday. This initiative is part of ongoing reforms within the Nigerian police force, as outlined in the Nigeria Police Act 2020.

The VCRU is designed to replace the existing tactical format and provide a swift, intelligence-led response to kidnapping, armed robbery, and cult-related violence across Sokoto State. Commissioner of Police Hayatu Shaffa described this initiative as a significant step towards modern, community-based policing that emphasizes professionalism and respect for human rights.

The unit will operate from the state command headquarters and will be divided into three operational sectors covering the eastern, central, and northern axes of the state. The police command, led by Ahmad Rufa, stressed its commitment to protecting lives and property while ensuring transparency and adherence to the rule of law.

A complaint hotline (08032861946) was established for residents to report grievances against police misconduct.
