Enugu Police Investigate Checkpoint Extortion Claims

The Enugu State Police Command has announced an investigation into allegations of extortion by police personnel at various checkpoints along major routes in Nsukka. This decision follows a viral social media post by user DJ Spoiltkid, who raised concerns about motorists and commercial riders being forced to make illegal payments at multiple checkpoints.

The post highlighted the burden of high fuel costs and daily extortion on low-income earners, with claims of police officers and armed personnel engaging in these practices. Enugu State Police Command spokesperson Daniel Ndukw assured that the matter would be escalated for immediate action and emphasized that such alleged conduct would not be tolerated.

He requested further evidence, including unblurred images, to aid the investigation. This response comes amid ongoing concerns about police extortion at checkpoints across Nigeria, prompting calls for stricter oversight and accountability within security agencies.
