Katsina Police Launch Violent Crime Response Unit

On Friday, the Katsina State Police Command officially launched the Violent Crime Response Unit (VCRU) as part of efforts to strengthen security operations in response to the increasing violent crime in the state. Commissioner of Police Ali Umar Fage stated that the establishment of the unit aligns with the reform agenda and vision of the Inspector General of Police, aimed at improving efficiency and accountability within the Nigerian Police Force.

The VCRU is designed to be a reorganized tactical operational unit that coordinates intelligence-driven responses to emerging security threats, focusing on tackling armed robbery, kidnapping, banditry, cattle rustling, unlawful possession of firearms, and other violent criminal activities. The Commissioner emphasized the importance of enhancing security architecture and improving public confidence in the police.

The unit will operate under strict adherence to constitutional compliance and respect for human rights, with a civilian oversight board established to monitor its activities, including representatives from traditional institutions, civil society organizations, and the Nigerian Bar Association.
