Public Support Grows for Fuel Subsidy Restoration in Nigeria

The discussion surrounding the removal of the fuel subsidy in Nigeria has intensified, particularly following the proposal from Atiku Abubakar, the Presidential Candidate of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), to reinstate it. This proposition has resonated positively with the Nigerian public, prompting a reaction from incumbent President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, who criticized Abubakar's suggestion as indicative of ignorance regarding governance and economic matters.

Nyesom Wike, Nigeria’s Minister of Federal Capital Territory, also disparaged Abubakar, labeling him a confused politician and a "voodoo economist." The current administration appears to be in a state of panic as public dissatisfaction grows due to rising poverty and inflation, leading to calls for social protection measures. Despite efforts to roll out palliative programs, the government’s initiatives are seen as insufficient, potentially benefiting only about four million people, leaving the majority of citizens to cope with economic hardships on their own.
