ASUU Criticizes Political Interference in University Hiring

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has raised concerns regarding political interference in the recruitment of academic staff, as stated by ASUU Zonal Coordinator for the Bauchi Zone, Prof. Timothy Namo, during a press conference at the University of Jos. Namo indicated that the prolonged period without recruitment has created significant gaps in the university system, exacerbated by politicians influencing the hiring process.

He noted that politicians, including senators and members of the House of Assembly, are submitting lists of candidates, many of whom lack the necessary qualifications for academic positions. ASUU President, Prof. Christopher Piwuna, described this trend as detrimental to the quality of education in Nigeria.

He also criticized the conversion of non-academic staff to academic roles without proper training. Piwuna emphasized the need for due process to uphold educational standards and expressed concern over the absence of communication between ASUU and President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for three years, calling it shameful for the government.
