ASUU Demands Salary Payment and Education Review

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), led by National President Prof. Chris Piwuna, held a press conference in Jos, Plateau State, where they condemned the non-payment of the balance of lecturers' salaries withheld during the 2022 nationwide strike. Piwuna noted that while the Federal Government had paid four out of the seven-and-a-half months' salaries withheld by the previous administration, the remaining balance has not been addressed, leaving ASUU members dissatisfied.

He expressed concern over the delay in the payment of wage awards and promotion arrears, urging the Federal and State Governments to fulfill these obligations to maintain industrial harmony in universities. Piwuna also criticized the inconsistent implementation of the December 2025 FGN-ASUU Agreement, which was intended to stabilize the Nigerian University System.

He highlighted funding challenges faced by Vice-Chancellors in implementing financial components of the Agreement, indicating that the lack of funding could lead to renewed unrest on campuses.
